While a ship can’t completely avoid all weather, it does have the ability to maneuver or change course to offer a more comfortable ride when possible. Of course, but remember that cruise lines have no interest in a cruise that tosses the ship around. Even if passengers don’t get seasick, it doesn’t exactly make for a fun vacation. We can tell you after taking dozens of cruises, that’s simply not the case.

When in doubt, stick to plain foods that won't aggravate your nausea. These stabilizers help to reduce the chances of seasickness for many passengers. With these features, they are less likely to be affected by rough seas, providing a smoother sailing experience for passengers. Larger ships tend to be more stable and provide a smoother ride, making them a better choice for those prone to seasickness.
Ships have stabilizers that help to cut down on how much you feel the motion when you’re on the ship, and on more modern ships these are a lot more effective and efficient. The rule of thumb is that midship staterooms experience the least rocking, followed by aft and then forward staterooms. If you’re prone to motion sickness, a Deck 2 midship cabin may be more comfortable than a Deck 9 forward cabin.
Ginger root is one of the oldest and most famous remedies for seasickness. Whether in the form of candy, tea, or supplements, it's effectively alleviated nausea for centuries. Without any remedies, I would rate my usual (“control”) feeling of seasickness at a 7/10. With the bands on (and with me applying some additional pressure), I felt more like a 5/10. Women and children are more susceptible, and genetic markers can indicate those more likely to experience it. People who get migraines are also more likely to suffer from motion sickness.
Once your body acclimates to the motion and you get your “sea legs,” the symptoms usually dissipate. My room was located on the 10th floor, just between the middle and the back of the ship. It was middle enough that I didn’t feel seasick while inside the room. The swaying and seesawing of the boat will be most extreme on the outside edges, so head to the middle of the ship to alleviate some of the effect. You may even want to book a room in this area of the cruise ship so your nights are less rocked by the motion of the ocean. On the vast majority of cruises, we wouldn’t label seasickness as a major issue.
If you know the rocking of the waves might upset your stomach, plan ahead by packing some medication for seasickness. Antiemetic drugs, or medicine that keeps one from feeling nauseous, are readily available over the counter in drug stores nationwide. Your doctor can prescribe stronger scopolamine medicine in patch or pill form as needed. Either way, be sure you remember to pack these medications to keep you from feeling sick as you cruise to your destination. Staterooms located in the middle of the ship are also better locations if you’re prone to seasickness. Areas in the forward or back of the cruise ship are likely to feel more motion.
It may sound simple, but keeping hydrated by drinking a lot of water will help prevent feelings of seasickness. While on a cruise you may be getting too much sun and even drinking too many alcoholic drinks, which can lead to becoming dehydrated. Motion sickness happens due to repeated or continuous movement that affects our inner ear and sense of balance.
When selecting your stateroom, go for a cabin located near the middle of the ship and on a lower deck, as these areas tend to experience less motion. These stabilizers can make a massive difference in the amount of motion you feel on board, often reducing the chances of getting seasick. This disorientation can then lead to the onset of seasickness symptoms. Assuming that’s true, you should be cautious about talking about potential seasickness excessively in advance of the cruise, particularly in front of your kids. Also, if there is a balcony stateroom that fits within your budget, grab it. Being able actually to see the horizon helps mitigate the queasiness from the ship’s movements.
Over-the-counter medications like Dramamine and Bonine are stocked on most ocean liners. If the ship’s shops are not open, stop by the Guest Services desk onboard. Of course, even the largest ships will still move about, but some are better at handling it. Avoid booking staterooms near the front or back of the vessel—the bow and aft experience lots of movement from the ship bouncing over the waves. Sucking on a peppermint candy or smelling peppermint oil has also been shown to combat seasickness. Instead, the cruise ship drops anchor in the harbor, and passengers are ferried to shore on smaller boats called tenders.

BlueCruise will keep the vehicle centered in the lane and subtly reposition itself when other vehicles crowd the lane and get too close. The good news is that, for the most part, Ford and Lincoln could address a lot of this uncertainty with software updates. ActiveGlide and BlueCruise are part of the automaker's OTA-capable system, with the potential for upgrades, tweaks, and new features being added remotely. It's not something I've observed in my multiple experiences with Super Cruise, and it definitely undermines some of your trust — and your degree of relaxation — with ActiveGlide. Knowing you'll need to be involved in more aggressive turns is one thing, but the uncertainty means you're always second-guessing just how adept the system will be. It kept me on my toes and attentive, yes, but I'm not sure it was any more relaxing overall than simply driving myself would've been.
If you look away, whether that's to watch the scenery, play with the infotainment system, or anything else, the system will demand your attention back. Ignore the escalating series of beeps and visual warnings, and eventually, ActiveGlide will deactivate altogether.
